Dustin Johnson comes up big for our members

By Christopher Tyler Baker - 6 months ago in PGA News

It’s been a very, very good year for our PGA Pros. The DK Legends team of Pros have been picking tournament winners all year long and this weekend was no exception. We picked Dustin Johnson as one of our golfers and he rewarded our members with a victory at the PGA World Championships in Mexico. Johnson was only about 14% owned in most DFS contests. So far this season we have picked 4 winners, 24 top 10 golfers and have a 77% cut rate.

Johnson became the fifth player to win in his debut at No. 1. The victory was also his fourth WGC title, second only to Tiger Woods (18). Johnson now has won five PGA Tour victories in his last 15 starts dating back to the U.S. Open last summer at Oakmont. His other victories were two World Golf Championships, a FedEx Cup playoff event and the Genesis Open at Riviera, which had the strongest field of regular PGA Tour events.

Dating to the start of 2016, he has finished among the top 10 in 20 out of 29 tournaments worldwide. He now has 14 victories in his 10th year on the PGA Tour. Johnson is the sixth player to win his first start after being elevated to the world No. 1, joining Greg Norman (1986), Ian Woosnam (1991), David Duval (1999), Vijay Singh (2004) and Adam Scott (2014). In his last three tournaments — at Pebble Beach, Riviera and here — Johnson has a cumulative score of 45 under, with two victories and a third-place finish.

Johnson’s strength and flexibility give him a power advantage over many of his peers. So far this season his 316.2 yard driving average his second-longest on tour, and his 122 mph average club head speed is safely within the top 10.

Johnson’s final-round 68, which he secured with pars on the finishing three holes, produced a 14-under total and a win over Fleetwood (one stroke behind) and other pursuers including Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson.

The Westgate Las Vegas Superbook listed him as the 6-to-1 favorite to win the Masters. We’re not ready to crown him just yet, but we will be monitoring his rounds.

Up next is the Valspar Championships at Innisbrook resort in Palm Harbor, FL. Our Pros are already preparing and we will have our picks up for you later this week.
