Late August is a tough time for most Major League Baseball clubs, navigating through heat and nagging injuries. Many players start to wear down, leading to missed games so they can avoid further damage. This time on the disabled list has forced daily fantasy participants to find alternatives to stalwarts like Chris Sale, Mike Trout, Trevor Bauer, and Aaron Judge, who are all currently shelved with various injuries.
Fortunately, there are plenty of players having monster seasons, so the absence of stars like the aforementioned won’t leave you struggling to fill out a quality lineup on FanDuel or DraftKings.
Key Pitchers to Consider in the Coming Weeks
The St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland A’s are two of the hottest teams right now. For Oakland, picking up Mike Fiers from Detroit has certainly helped matters. He’s notched two victories in three starts since joining the surging A’s, giving up only three runs while striking out 21. For the Cardinals, their momentum can be attributed to Jack Flaherty and Miles Mikolas racking up the wins as of late.
The Mets and Braves have also provided some great fantasy value in the pitching department. Mike Foltynewicz and Kevin Gausman have been keeping the young Atlanta team in line for a visit to the postseason with lockdown performances in pivotal games. Jacob DeGrom and Zach Wheeler are pitching like it’s five years ago, absolutely dominating throughout the month of August.
While DeGrom will cost daily fantasy players a pretty penny, guys like Flaherty and Fiers can be picked up for relatively cheap considering they’ve put up around 50 fantasy points a start lately. Saving a little extra on pitching could be crucial, as there are a slew of hitters locked in right now, putting up big numbers.
Taking Advantage of Thriving Offenses
Boston and Cleveland’s offenses have been hammering the ball all season, but two other playoff hopefuls, the Yankees and Dodgers, have a few players starting to click at the right time. Everyone knows what all-stars Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger can do, but the third basemen from their teams, Miguel Andujar and Justin Turner, are more affordable options and provide the same impact to a lineup.
But everyone’s found themselves with way less than they’d hoped for to spend on their last pick. Scouring the bottom of the salary pool can be tricky, but there are players like Harrison Bader and Amed Rosario, both regular starters, that have been performing decently over the last 15 games. Each are available for under $4000 on DraftKings.

With a multitude of dynamic stars to choose from in both pitching and offense, it can be difficult to craft a winning lineup each day. Everyone knows Mike Trout and Chris Sale are can’t miss players, but it’s not always wise to devote that much of your bankroll to such high salaries.
Winning DFS baseball lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel are often made up of great value picks. Now that a hundred plus games are in the books, let’s look back at the players at each position that can provide your roster that sneaky value that can help you win big.
Pitching
Starters like Jon Lester, Blake Snell, and Miles Mikolas have all racked up double digit wins, but won’t put quite the dent in your bankroll as Max Scherzer or any of the Houston pitchers for that matter. If you are looking for an intriguing, but affordable option, Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Indians has made quite the splash since becoming a fixture at the backend of an already dominant rotation. He’s available for around $8000 on FanDuel and $8100 on DraftKings.
Catcher/First Base
These two positions don’t have the same amount of offensive prowess as in years past, but many emerging young players are quickly putting an end to that. J.T. Realmuto has managed double digit home runs and a .300 plus average from the weaker group at the catcher position. C.J. Cron of the young Rays team has shown quite a bit of pop this year, belting 19 home runs. Each player will be found in the mid-tier price range and average double digit fantasy points a game. Will Meyers is a player that has been rounding into shape as of late, and could represent a good sleeper pick depending on the pitching matchup.
Second Base
Despite his strikeouts, Yoan Moncada has averaged over 10 points per game on FanDuel this season. He’s heated up this past month, but can still be found toward the bottom of the salary list for second baseman. Jed Lowrie was lighting things up in the first half, but has cooled as of late. But with his name linked to many trade rumors, a fresh start could find him producing once again.
Third Base
Eugenio Suarez is all the talk of the 2018 MLB season, but for daily fantasy purposes, he’s still a bonafide sleeper. Available in the mid three thousand range, the young Reds third baseman can provide significant punch to a lineup. Travis Shaw is another option to consider if looking for a cheap option. His sub .250 average isn’t pretty, but he’s the type of streaky hitter who could go on a tear for a few weeks and rack up the fantasy points.
Shortstop
Xander Bogaerts is on the higher end of the middle tier, but with so many powerhouses hitting in front of him, the Boston shortstop has feasted on pitchers’ mistakes to the tune of 16 home runs. Bogaerts’ pinstriped rival, Didi Gregorius, is also one who could provide great value in the second half of the season. The left handed hitter has shown decent pop this season and is likely to continue hitting as a part of the much vaunted Yankee lineup. He can usually be picked up for around $4000 on DraftKings.
Outfield
There are so many studs at this position that the value picks are a plenty. Arizona’s A.J. Pollock has really found his form as the season moves along, and is still found way down the list of available options. Kris Davis has cooled off recently, but it appears the All-Star break has rejuvenated him. With a two-homer game last weekend, the Oakland slugger may be that sneaky pick that puts you ahead of the pack. Shin-soo Choo and Nicholas Castellanos are two players that continue to put up solid numbers, but picking them up in the $3000 ranges could save you quite a bit if you’ve splurged for a big name player like Mookie Betts.

Eric Ebron was supposed to be a game changer for the Detroit Lions when they took him with the No. 10 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. But he never quite caught on with Matthew Stafford and the Lions pass-happy offense. In four years he only caught 186 passes for 2,070 yards and 11 touchdowns.
It wasn’t surprising when they let him go in March. It also wasn’t surprising when someone else—the Indianapolis Colts — picked up and signed him within days of the Lions letting him go. Can he turn into a viable daily fantasy option with the Colts?
Why will he be any different in Indianapolis?
Players have struggled with the team that drafted them, been let go, and found success with their second team in the past. From what has been said about Ebron by the Colts staff via the Indianapolis Star, it sounds like that could be the case here:
“He’s really smart,” Colts head coach Frank Reich said of Ebron. “I knew that because we did our homework before he got here. We knew he was a smart player. But he’s like really a highly intelligent football player. And that’s really good because you want to use a guy with the versatility that he has and move him around and call all kinds of things with him. That helps. And he’s an explosive athlete.”
That’s nice, but…
It is great that he comes off as such a smart guy, but what will probably help his daily fantasy value more is the Colts roster. They are not built to be a great running team, so they will likely stick to the pass as they have in recent years.
As far as receivers go, they have TY Hilton—and that’s really it. They picked up Ryan Grant in free agency, but he’s nothing to write home about. That means the Colts are going to need to throw a lot of passes to Marlon Mack out of the backfield or throw a lot to the tight ends, Jack Doyle and Ebron.
The Colts only receiving threat was Hilton last season (because Montcrief was a bust), so they used Jack Doyle a lot. He was target 107 times (Hilton was targeted 108) and made 80 receptions for 690 yards and four touchdowns.
So—does this mean draft him?
Don’t make him your No. 1 tight end. But if you spend most of your salary cap on the other guys, he could be a surprisingly good sleeper.
