Bullish or Bearish – Andrew Cashner

By Matthew Kirkeby - 5 years ago in MLB News

Andrew Cashner

Andrew Cashner

I am stunned that this article still bears writing, but with an ERA of 2.92 on the year, someone needs to remind Andrew Cashner that he sucks.  The Padres “prize” for dealing Rizzo to the Cubs before the 2012 season, Cashner was initially known for a 100 mph fastball and being fragile.  Starting with a 10.10 K/9 in 5 starts over 34 appearances, Cashner looked capable of meeting promise in 2013 and 2014 with ERAs of 3.09 and 2.55 respectively over 300 innings as a starter.

The decline of Andrew Cashner is real

However, things started declining for him in 2015 through 2016.  After finishing 2014 with an elite 2.12 BB/9, his control faded sharply.  He walked 3.22 per 9 in 2015 and an ugly 4.09 per 9 in 2016.  This year it is untenable at 4.96 BB/9.  Supporting the decline in walk rate, his First Pitch strike numbers were average (60%) to above average; he now only gets a strike on 52.1% of his pitches.  Were it not for this multi-year trend, it may be something he could fix or improve upon, but looking at his strikeout rates may provide context for this gradual decline.

Andrew Cashner

That 10.10 K/9 stayed between 6.5 and 7.6 from 2013 to 2016, is now down to 3.81 K/9 over 9 starts in 2017.  That is the kind of stuff that gets a pitcher designated for assignment.  Supporting that is the decline he has shown in swinging strikes.  A 12.1% swinging strike out rate in 2012 showed his promise.  It went down to 8% for 3 years, down to 7.3% in 2016, and now pathetically lies at 5.8%.  He is making Zach Eflin look like a fireballer.

Stay clear of Andrew Cashner

Sometimes pitchers get lucky and sometimes that luck lasts 9+ starts into the season.  Cashner must have the world’s largest horseshoe supply stuck up his butt.  But don’t you dare try using him as a GPP, because he will drop all those horseshoes out in epic fashion.  I don’t want to be around for that unless I’m stacking his opponent against him.

I’m Bearish as hell on Cashner.  He could get pulled from the Rangers rotation this year if they stay in range of a Wild Card, but he will do everything he can to keep that from happening.
