Derek Carr’s Record Breaking Contract
Move over Andrew Luck, there’s a new cash king in town. This June, Raiders quarterback, Derek Carr became the highest paid player in the National Football League. His five-year contract adds up to whopping 125-million dollars, with a 70-million dollar guarantee. This is not only the highest salary of any other QB in the League, but in NFL history.
So Where is the Bread Going?
Bakersfield native, Carr says that the contract won’t change the way he lives. This is common attitude of current sports stars since many now plan to make their money last long after their playing days are over. Carr comments that he appreciates the money but joked that his first splurge item would be Chick-fil-A and a little something for his wife, of course. First and foremost, however, the Raider stated he will donate a portion of his income to charity, as he has done since college. He reiterated that part of his excitement from receiving the contract is the fact that it will help a lot of people, including other NFL athletes.
The Ripple Effect
While Carr’s contract is definitely great news for him, it is even better news for his fellow quarterbacks in the League. As time goes on, professional teams will have to give their star players a reasonable salary, and Carr’s deal just raised the amount athlete’s view as reasonable. The fact is, the Raiders’ number Four will not stay at the top of the hill for long. Potential dethroners could be anyone from the Washington Redskins’ Kirk Cousins, to Green Bay Pakers’ Aaron Rodgers. These teams are sure to meet the new salary requirements, since these players are usually the public face of their respective organizations. So congratulations to Derek Carr and his new record, but as they say, records are meant to be broken.
