Must-Start Running Back Pick Of The Week: Miami’s Kenyan Drake
It can be kinda hard to imagine a guy that carried the ball just 13 times last week against the Kansas City Chiefs and gained just 57 yards is a must-start. However, Miami Dolphins running back Kenyan Drake is just that.
Not just because he was a stud in the weeks prior to last week’s game, but because of who the Dolphins are playing this week, the Buffalo Bills.
But isn’t Buffalo trying to make the playoffs still?
Buffalo can make the playoffs with a win and losses by Tennessee and the Chargers. But just having something to play for doesn’t mean a team is going to become adept at stopping the run suddenly. On the season, the Bills are 30th against the run and are allowing 126.7 yards/game on the ground.
But how they’ve played in recent weeks is what is really eye-opening. Over the last month, they have allowed teams to run for 191, 163, 100, and 193 yards. Two guys ran for 100+, and five total touchdowns were scored on the ground.
The Bills have been giving up some yards on the ground the last month. There is no reason to suspect ‘having something to play for’ is going to make them better suddenly.
To be fair….
The Bills did play the Dolphins just a couple week ago in Buffalo and held them to 100 total yards on the ground (78 by Kenyan Drake) and one touchdown (also by Drake). So, it is not like they haven’t stopped Drake before.
Theoretically, there is no reason to think they can’t do it again.
So why is Drake going to have a better game this time?
Drake ran for 78 yards, and a touchdown on 16 carries when the Dolphins played up in Buffalo. That’s an average of 4.9 yards a carry. At that rate, with five more carries, he would have surpassed the 100-yard mark.
When he’s carried the ball 20+ times, he’s gained over 100 yards, and the Dolphins have won. Look for the Dolphins to do what they can to win their season finale. If that means Drake needs 20+ carries, he’ll get 20+ carries.
