Week 12 Monday Night Football Preview

The Philadelphia Eagles (5-5) will host the reeling Green Bay Packers (4-6) in this week’s Monday Night showdown. The two teams have met 42 times (3 postseason) with the Packers leading the series 26-16. The Eagles are fighting to stay alive in the NFC Wildcard hunt while the Packers are just trying to stay alive.

Can the Pack get back?

The Packers are coming off a week 11 throttling at the hands of the Redskins and are on a four game losing streak. Rodgers threw for 351 yards, 3 TDs and had 33 yards rushing in that game. The rest of the Packers backfield had 51 yards rushing combined. The complete lack of a running game is catching up with the Packers and is stressing the offense beyond it’s limits. Rodgers is certainly the guy you want to put the team on his back for a game-winning drive, but those types of heroics are not sustainable for four quarters. Especially when opposing defenses know they won’t face a viable rushing attack. The return of James Starks hasn’t helped and the signing of Christine Michael has the potential to as impactful as the Knile Davis signing. A Packers running back has yet to score a rushing touchdown this season.

Can the Eagles gain some altitude?

Philadelphia and rookie quarterback Carson Wentz started the season 3-0 but now sit at 5-5 at the bottom of a surprisingly competitive NFC East. Wentz began the season playing very good, mistake-free football but has experienced a drop-off as the season has progressed. He has thrown six interceptions in the last five games and has faltered against tough defenses. Coach Peterson voiced that he expects mistakes from his rookie quarterback that is learning on the job and gives Wentz a lot of credit for the successes that the team has had this year. Another big reason for the Eagles success this season is it’s defense. This season the Eagles are 0-5 when allowing more than 15 points and they have a great defense that does a good job of limiting opposing offenses. The defense will need to continue to play well and Wentz will need to accelerate his learning curve if the Eagles are to remain in playoff contention.

This matchup

It’s very unlikely the Packers are going to be able to run the ball and the Eagles are good enough against the pass to give Wentz and the offense a good chance to win. Green Bay has not been good against the run as of late so expect rookie Wendell Smallwood to make a good showing in relief of the oft-injured Ryan Matthews. Sproles practiced in full this week so he will be available as well. Aaron Rodgers is showing cracks (calling out his coaches, yelling at teammates, hating his parents) but he is still one of best in the game so expect good numbers from him. This game could be the end of the Packers season so we will see how they respond when their backs are against the wall. The Eagles are just glad not to be at the bottom of the league during what was widely considered to be a rebuilding season. This could be a very fun game to watch.
