Week 6 Monday Night Football Preview

The Arizona Cardinals (2-3) will host the New York Jets (1-4) for this week’s Monday Night Football showdown. This is the 8th regular season matchup between these teams. New York holds a 6-2 advantage in the series with the Cardinals not logging a win against the Jets since 1975— the longest active streak in the NFL.

Turnovers

The Cardinals defensive unit has generated 12 turnovers this year— tied for second most in the league. The Jets offense has turned the ball over 13 times— also tied for second most in the league. Fitzpatrick leads the league in interceptions (10) and fumbles (5 with 0 lost). The Jets defense has generated only 3 turnovers this season— fewest in the NFL.

David Johnson vs Jets defense

The Jets rank second in the NFL for the fewest rushing yards allowed per game (68.4) which is bad news for Cardinals running back David Johnson, who averages 5.0 yards per carry. Carson Palmer is back from injury but passing game has been struggling so far this season and the team has leaned heavily on Johnson. He may not have much success running the ball in this game but he is third on the team in catches and receiving yards so expect him to be an important part of the game plan. Johnson has gained at least 100 all purpose yards in every game this season.

Struggling passing offenses

Both passing offenses have struggled so far this season. Fitzpatrick has thrown twice as many interceptions as touchdowns and now the team must move forward without Eric Decker (IR) who was a top red zone target. Brandon Marshall is healthy but will most likely draw Patrick Peterson in coverage. The Cards rank fourth in the league allowing an average of just 190 passing yards per game.

Last year the Cards averaged 30+ points per game and a their passing attack played a huge roll in that success. This season the passing offense looks mediocre and ranks 16th. The Jets have one of the leagues worst passing defenses so this could be a good matchup for the Cardinals to jump start Carson Palmer and company.
