What Does Rob Gronkowski’s Suspension Mean For Dwayne Allen?
It as a boneheaded move by New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. There was no need for him to leap on top of Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White long after the play had ended. There as certainly no need for him to throw an elbow and forearm into the back of his head.
Gronkowski apologized for the hit after the game. But apparently doesn’t feel too sorry about the hit since he’s appealing the one game suspension that has been handed down. There is no way the league reduces the penalty.
So, who will pick up the slack?
Dwayne Allen perhaps?
Allen has not factored into the game plan for the Patriots very much this season. He has a grand total of five catches for 40 yards and a touchdown—all within the last four weeks. Since New England has been fond of two-tight end sets and let Martellus Bennett go, you would have thought he’d have been utilized more this season.
But with Gronkowski out for next week’s game against the Miami Dolphins, will he see more opportunities come his way?
Will he be worth starting in daily fantasy play?
Absolutely not.
There is no reason to think the Patriots will make Allen a focus just because Gronkowski is out. When Gronkowski missed several games last season, Martellus Bennett did not see an increase in his workload.
After Julian Edelman was lost for the season this year, the Patriots didn’t target any one player significantly more.
So, where will Gronk’s workload go?
If anyone were to absorb Gronk’s opportunities, the safe bet would be the Patriots running backs and Brandin Cooks. Any downfield looks would more likely go to Cooks over anyone else. All of his intermediate and short-range work will probably go to the Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead.
Tight ends are often used to move the chains and no one does that better than the Patriots running backs.
