Adam Thielen, Stefon Diggs, Or Both?
Choosing wide receivers during Championship Week is a little easier because the options are limited. If you don’t have too many to choose from, then it becomes easier to pick out who the best options are. But then again, it becomes a little tougher if it appears like two of the better options are on the same team.
For instance, two of the better receivers this week play for the Minnesota Vikings, Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen. Which one is more likely to have the better day this week against Philadelphia? Should you consider starting both?
The Vikings passing game is not too shabby.
Behind the surprising yet solid play of Case Keenum, the Vikings finished the regular season with the 11th ranked pass offense in the league. But can they be as good or better against the Eagles 17th ranked pass defense?
Keenum has played well against higher ranked pass defenses, so there is no reason to think he’ll struggle. So, the question comes down to whether Thielen or Diggs is more likely to have a better day.
Thielen is targeted more than Diggs (143 to 95) and has made more receptions (91 to 64). Both have a fairly high per reception average (14.0 for Thielen and 13.3 for Diggs). But Diggs and Rudolph appear to be Keenum’s go-to guys in the red zone (eight touchdowns each; Thielen has four). Thielen has made more big plays (25+ yards) than Diggs as well (11 to eight).
From a fantasy standpoint, Thielen outscored Diggs in ESPN leagues, 239.7 to 198.2.
So….
Diggs will likely get a ton of attention from daily fantasy players thanks to the game-winning 61-yard touchdown catch he made last week. But prior to that catch, he had one less reception (five) than Thielen (six), only two more yards (76 to 74), and the same number of targets.
If you just look at their production, Thielen has clearly had the better fantasy season. But the Eagles do not allow too many guys to surpass 100+ yards receiving. In this case, it may be better to go with the guy more likely to score touchdowns, Diggs.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to star both. It is hard to rely on Nick Foles or Blake Bortles to have good days. It is not hard to imagine Tom Brady having a bad day as well.
That leaves the Vikings passing game– and Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen.
