Should You Stay Away From Tom Brady This Week?
Should You Stay Away From Tom Brady This Week?
If there is anyone still playing that should concern daily fantasy players it is New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady—right? We’re talking about the likely MVP, the 40-year old marvel, one of the most productive quarterbacks in NFL history. Surely, he’s a safe start this week—right?
Eh, maybe not.
Jacksonville’s defense is no joke.
Throughout the regular season, no defense was tougher on quarterbacks than they were. Not only did they sack opposing quarterbacks 55 times during the regular season, but they allowed an average of 10.4 fantasy points/game.
Yes, they did allow Ben Roethlisberger to throw for 469 yards and five touchdowns last week.
Yes, Tom Brady is a better quarterback than Big Ben. But Brady doesn’t have the cast of receivers that Big Ben has.
Roethlisberger’s games (last week and Week Five) are an anomaly compared to the rest of the Jaguars opponents. Few opponents broke the 200+ yard mark, and none ever threatened to throw for 300+. But if there is anyone that can crack the tough shell that is the Jacksonville defense, it is Tom Brady.
But even Brady isn’t infallible—and now he’s hurt?
According to several media reports, Brady suffered a minor injury to his throwing hand during a recent practice. Exactly what happened has not been made public, but it appears that he and another player collided. His hand was jammed hard enough that the team had x-rays taken (which came back negative).
But according to those same reports, the injury could have an effect on how he plays this week. The key word, of course, is ‘could.’
Brady was back at practice Thursday but with gloves on each hand.
So….
Normally, it would be a no-brainer. You start Tom Brady when it comes to the big games. But on the off-chance that his hand is legitimately hurt (to the point where it does affect his game), and with him playing an extremely tough defense this week, it might not be a bad idea to look elsewhere.
It may be safer to go with a cheaper option at quarterback but then go with bigger names at running back or wide receiver.
