Buyer Beware Team Of The Week: The Denver Broncos

Week 17 in the NFL can be a tough one to predict since fans don’t know who is going to play and whether the playoff teams are going to try hard. But the can usually count on some of the non-playoff teams to put up a decent performance as they try to earn a little pride before the season ends.

One team that could use a little pride is the Denver Broncos, but fans shouldn’t expect them to earn any Sunday against the Chiefs.

Why not?

With the Kansas City Chiefs already locked into a playoff spot, will they care about winning this one? It depends on who you talk to.

“I think there are advantages and disadvantages [to resting players] that you could make arguments for,” Alex Smith said (ESPN).

Yes, they have to be concerned about injuries. But the Chiefs went through a pretty bad stretch that saw them lose six of seven games. They appear to have righted the ship the last three weeks, but are they secure with what they’ve seen out of the offense?

Can they trust it? Not really….

Shouldn’t that be good for Denver?

You’d think it would be good for the Broncos if the Chiefs sat Alex Smith and the rest of the team’s key players. But that would mean facing Patrick Mahomes (who looked fantastic during the preseason), and that’s not good.

But the news gets worse.

With Brock Osweiler and Trevor Siemian at quarterback this season, there were games where the Broncos skill position players had good statistical days. But this week don’t expect anyone to have one—Paxton Lynch is going to be starting.

Paxton Lynch week 17

To be fair, he was drafted in the first round which should mean he has some talent. But so far, during his limited playing time, it has not been apparent.

But with quarterback play an issue for the team as it looks towards next season, they need to know what they have on the roster. So, that means, now that he is healthy enough to play, they need to see Lynch play.

Is he really that bad?

Before he left the Week 12 game against Oakland, he was 9-14 for 41 yards and an interception. With him nursing an ankle injury the last few weeks, it is unlikely he is going to be any better than he was then.

So, leave the Broncos out of your lineup this week. But give some thought to starting the Chiefs defense.
