DFS Players had a Weekend of Excitement
For the second straight PGA Tour event, it took more than 72 holes to determine a champion. Jon Rahm was able to fend off Andrew Landry in the fourth sudden-death playoff hole at The Stadium Course at PGA West on Sunday, catapulting him to number two in the world rankings with the win. Despite this being only his second PGA victory, Rahm moved ahead of the young Jordan Spieth thanks to consistent play and a penchant for making birdies.
Recapping the Battle in the Desert
Rahm started the CareerBuilder Challenge on fire, shooting a career best 62 and giving daily fantasy golf experts hope for another wild weekend of scoring. Despite some tough pin locations, over 50 golfers in the field finished the tournament at least ten under par.
As the runner-up, Landry continued to provide great value in weekend contests, as he now has his third top-three finish on the young season. Austin Cook, who lead the CareerBuilder at the end of play Saturday, had troubles on Sunday, giving back strokes and finishing the tournament well out of the trophy hunt.
Last week’s players to watch Brian Harman, Jason Dufner, and defending champ Hudson Swafford wound up in the middle of the pack for points in weekend contests. Bill Haas didn’t provide the hidden value many hoped for this week, missing the cut.
Torrey Pines: The True Start of the PGA Season
Many PGA fans start paying attention to the early part of the PGA season when golf’s elite arrive in sunny La Jolla, California for The Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The stacked field includes Tiger Woods, making his season debut, last week’s (and the 2017 Farmers) champ Rahm, as well as tour notables Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, and Marc Leishman. Having a (supposedly) healthy seven-time champion teeing it up alongside the young, elite field should offer some great fireworks on this beautiful oceanside course.
While Rahm and Woods are obvious top dollar plays on both FanDuel and DraftKings, Torrey Pines favors big hitters and could theoretically see anyone in the field go on a birdie run good enough to take the tournament. San Diego native Phil Mickelson finds himself with long odds to win at Torrey Pines, as the three-time champ hasn’t fared very well here for the last decade. Quality golfers such as Jhonattan Vegas, Shane Lowry, and Lucas Glover can be had for a steal, rounding out lineups that can help you win big.
