Don’t Overlook New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas

Don’t Overlook New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas

Julio Jones and Tyreek Hill are probably going to get a significant amount of attention in daily fantasy leagues this weekend. While both certainly have huge upside, there is also a good chance both could get minimized depending on how things play out.

But if you want a receiver you can rely on to have at least a good, if not great daily fantasy day, look no further than New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.

Aren’t the Saints more of a running team now?

Yes, the Saints do lean more on the run than they have in recent years. But they still had the fifth-best passing game in the NFL this year. Incidentally, their running game ended being the fifth best in the league this season as well.

With how rookie running back Alvin Kamara has contributed this season, the run game has gotten the most attention. But when it comes down to it, the Saints are still the Saints. They like to pass and are very good at it.

They just don’t need to all the time in order to win like they used to.

But what about the Carolina defense?

The Panthers do have one of the better defenses in the NFL. They are better against the run (third; 88.1 yards/game allowed) than they are against the pass (18th; 229 yards/game allowed). Their last two games depicted the stats perfectly. They held the Falcons and Buccaneers to less than 70 yards on the ground, but each threw for 300+ yards and a touchdown.

The two previous times the Saints and Panthers played, the Saints had a fairly balanced attack. They had 148 and 149 yards on the ground and 200+ in the passing game. So, yeah, moving the ball against the Panthers does not appear to be an issue for the Saints.

Thomas wild card weekend

So— why take a look at Michael Thomas?

Alvin Kamara has gotten the most attention in New Orleans and with good reason. But Thomas has quietly had an excellent season (104 receptions for 1,245 yards and five touchdowns). In the games against the Panthers, he was targeted 17 times and made 14 receptions for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

He didn’t have what anyone would call a great daily fantasy day, but in both games, he did have a good day. The chances are good that the Panthers will look to take Kamara out of the game leaving Drew Brees and the passing game to win the game.

Should that be the case, a potentially good daily fantasy day will become a great one for Thomas.
