More Dramatic Finishes on the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing
More Dramatic Finishes on the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing
For the third straight week, a PGA event needed extra holes to determine the winner. This time, as the sun faded into the Pacific Ocean at Torrey Pines’ south course late Sunday, the 2018 Farmers Insurance Open would have to wait until Monday morning to be decided. But Jason Day wasted no time after the overnight delay, vanquishing Alex Noren on the first attempt Monday after drawing to a stalemate through five playoff holes Sunday as darkness set in.
While the course played tough all week, Day provided some theatrics to weekend tournaments in daily fantasy play, finding scoring opportunities on a course that wasn’t kind to many golfers throughout the four days. Top golfers scored thirty to forty points lower this week but fifty golfers managed to end play at par or better, creating close matchups throughout FanDuel and DraftKings.
Making the Most of Opportunities
Day found himself close to the top of the leaderboard after round three, and promptly took advantage on Sunday, notching a 70 and forcing the playoff. Day’s victory was his first since the 2016 PGA Championship, a great start after injuries and inconsistent play made last year mostly forgettable for the major champion.
With all the attention Tiger Woods received heading into the tournament, he did fairly well, finishing tied for 23rd and notching 66 points in the DraftKings four-day tournament. Other early favorites had varying success. Rickie Fowler couldn’t put it together this week and found himself on the other side of the cut. Jon Rahm, the hottest golfer going right now, ended up in the middle of the pack, shooting two under for the tournament.
Last week’s popular sleeper picks, Lucas Glover, Jhonattan Vegas, and Shane Lowry ended up being a bust in most lineups. Vegas and Lowry missed the cut, while Glover had an atrocious weekend, giving back eight strokes after starting Saturday with an outside chance to compete. It was Noren, along with Keegan Bradley and JB Holmes who provided the true value for DFS golf competitors this week, as each were available for under $8000.
More Big Guns Return for Phoenix Open
Many of the world’s top 50 will tee it up in Phoenix this Thursday for the Waste Management Open at the TPC Scottsdale course. This spirited event is a favorite of players and fans alike, as it provides ample scoring opportunities and wild crowds.
As back to back champ, Hideki Matsuyama is a clear the favorite heading into this next stop on the West Coast Swing. Rounding out the rest of the higher salaried players available are Jordan Spieth, Rahm, Fowler, and Justin Thomas.
Phil Mickelson, who has a long history of tearing up this course, can actually be had for a decent price this week. Last year’s runner up Webb Simpson, along with Matt Kuchar and Holmes can provide a boost to many DFS lineup and are available in the middle tier of salaries. These players are well known for making cuts, which is a key component for great production from your fantasy lineup.
