Sleeper WR Pick Of The Week: Jacksonville Jaguars WR Keelan Cole

With the Jacksonville Jaguars locked into the No. 3 seed in the AFC, there is no reason for the team to play their starters this week when they face Tennessee. Doing so opens them up to the possibility of losing someone for the following week— when the game matters.

Yes, it would be nice to get some revenge for their loss the Titans handed them earlier this season.  But if the Titans win this week, they can get their revenge next week in the Wild Card Game. However, it sounds like head coach Doug Marone is looking to play his starters.

“Make no mistake about it, just so there is not a lot of talk during the week: When the players come in [Wednesday], we are talking about how we are going to play to win and do everything we possibly can to win this game, period,” Marrone said (ESPN). “I am not even thinking about what happens beyond that, and that is the way we are going to go about our business this week.”

So why does that make Keelan Cole a sleeper?

Saying everyone is going to play is one thing, but doing so when it would be unwise is another. Leonard Fournette has had injury issues, and the last thing the Jaguars need is to lose him in a meaningless game. Marqise Lee has had injury issues as well and didn’t play last week against the 49ers.

Should they lose either player in a meaningless game heading into the team’s first playoff game in nearly a decade, Doug Marrone can count on his seat being hot when the 2018 season starts.

So—what does that mean for Keelan Cole?

Keelan Cole has been the best offensive weapon in the Jaguars offense the last two weeks (13 receptions, 22 targets, 294 yards, and one touchdown). But prior to that, he hadn’t played a huge role in the Jaguars offensive plans (14 receptions, 27 targets, 263 yards, and two touchdowns).

Week 17

He has the hot hand for the offense, so it makes sense to ride him, but it would not be shocking to see Marrone try to protect him once the game is in hand. At the same time, the focus could be put more on the run game with T.J. Yeldon, Corey Grant, and Chris Ivory carrying the load.

If the running game can do it, the Jaguars will be more than happy to let them. But the Titans are not going to make it easy since a win gets them in the postseason. So, Jacksonville is going to need the passing game.

That means they will need Keelan Cole (and to a lesser degree Dede Westbrook).
