A second chance
Head Coach Andy Reid and General Manager John Dorsey were met with a lot of criticism when they drafted WR Tyreek Hill in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft. Reid and Dorsey arrived in Kansas City in 2013 at a time when the organization was still reeling from the tragic murder/suicide involving LB Javon Belcher. Throughout the Ray Rice and Greg Hardy scandals, Reid and Dorsey reinforced their often voiced commitment to finding “high-character players who love the game.” So when the Chiefs drafted Hill, who plead guilty to a 2014 domestic violence charge that got him kicked off the Oklahoma State football team, the Chiefs front office immediately came under fire from fans and the press. Reid and Dorsey defended their decision and insisted that they were confident in Hill’s commitment to rehabilitation. Tyreek Hill has done everything within his power to right his wrongs and has done everything that has been asked of him by the courts and the team with regards to therapy and counseling. He has embraced his second chance and he is certainly making the most of it.
An opportunity
Hill is a world-class athlete and his kick return prowess has been likened to future Hall of Famer Devin Hester by Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub. Hill’s talent is propelling him beyond special teams to an ever-increasing role in the offense. Hill is unpolished as a receiver but Reid is finding ways to get the rookie the ball. Hill’s snap counts have steadily increased as the season progresses and in week 10 he was on the field for 39 plays, was targeted 13 times and had 10 receptions for 89 yards. He also added one rush for 12 yards. The team is currently without #1 wideout Jeremy Maclin and Hill has stepped up in a big way. Last week Hill lead Kansas City’s receivers in targets, receptions and yardage.
Moving forward
Maclin’s eventual return will certainly mean less snaps for Hill, but Hill will continue to be a weapon that Reid will find ways to deploy. With raw skills and 5’ 8’ 185 lbs frame, Hill isn’t likely to see a high-volume roll but he can still provide good production with limited touches. Kansas City doesn’t have a high-octane passing attack and probably never will as long as Alex Smith is under center, but Hill is one of those special players that can score any time he touches the ball. Maclin is out again this week so Hill looks to be the top target in the passing game and has a great matchup against a terrible Bucs secondary. Hill is $4500 (9%) in DraftKings and $5400 (9%) in FanDuel. Hill is a great play this week and is worthy of every-week consideration as a cheap, high upside play in GPP tournaments moving forward.
